Todd Staples: True Conservative Leadership for Texas
Protecting the Texas Border
As Commissioner of Agriculture, Staples has challenged the Obama Administration to allocate adequate resources to secure the Texas border from life-threatening dangers from drug dealers and human smugglers crossing Texas soil. While federal leaders repeatedly deny the threat and daily violence, Staples is documenting the dangers Texas farmers and ranchers face along the border, and has gained state and national attention as an emerging leader on protecting the Texas border. A Champion for Private Property Owner Rights
As Commissioner of Agriculture, Staples has championed private property owner rights including passage of a 2009 state constitutional amendment protecting homeowners and landowners from eminent domain abuses. He also created an online website petition – www.protectyourhomeandland.com - to promote additional eminent domain reforms during the 2011 legislative session. Over 7,500 Texans signed the petition, and Governor Perry recently signed the bill into law.
Keeping Taxes Low
While serving in the Texas Legislature, Staples stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Governors Bush and Perry passing record setting tax breaks, which has enabled Texas to lead the nation in job growth.
Defending Pro-Life & Pro-Family Values
Consistently rated one of Texas’ top conservatives during his service in the Texas Legislature, Staples sponsored and helped pass a state constitutional amendment defining marriage as being between one man and one woman. The amendment passed with 81% voter approval. Prominent pro-life groups including Texas Right to Life and Texas Alliance for Life have consistently endorsed Todd in past elections.
Passing Landmark Lawsuit Abuse Reform
While in the legislature, Staples helped pass landmark lawsuit abuse reform. Since the implementation of “tort reform” in 2003, frivolous lawsuits have declined substantially making Texas a more attractive place to do business, and making healthcare more accessible and affordable. For his leadership on lawsuit abuse reform, Texans for Lawsuit Reform (TLR) recognized Todd with the “Civil Justice Leadership Award.”
